Thinking about your first ATV adventure but not sure what to expect? You’re not alone. Every week we welcome people who have never ridden an ATV (also known as a quad bike) before. By the end of the tour, most are amazed at how quickly they gain confidence and how much fun they have.

If you’re wondering whether an ATV tour in Chiang Mai is suitable for beginners, this guide will walk you through exactly what happens from the moment you arrive until you return from the jungle.

If you’d like to learn the basics of operating a quad bike before your trip, read our guide: How to Ride an ATV Quad Bike: Beginner Tips.

Your Adventure Starts Before You Reach the Base Camp

The experience begins on the drive to our ATV base camp in Mae Taeng, north of Chiang Mai. During the journey, you’ll watch a short safety and introduction video so you already understand the basics before arriving.

It’s a great way to relax, learn what to expect, and start getting excited for the adventure ahead.

Welcome to Our Mae Taeng Base Camp

After arriving, you’ll have time to settle in before heading out.

Our base camp offers:

  • Complimentary tea and coffee
  • A welcome drink
  • Clean toilets
  • Hot showers
  • Free lockers for your bags and valuables
  • Snacks and refreshments
  • A small shop with 8Adventures clothing and useful items such as buffs and sunglasses

It’s also a good chance to meet your guides and look around before getting ready.

Professional Safety Gear Comes First

One thing many guests notice immediately is the quality of our equipment.

Unlike many ATV operators that provide only a helmet, we equip riders with comprehensive protective gear including:

  • High-quality body armour
  • Knee pads
  • Gloves
  • International-standard full-face helmets with visors

Our guides carefully fit each piece of equipment to make sure it is comfortable and secure. If something doesn’t feel right, they’ll adjust it before you begin.

Feeling comfortable in your gear makes a huge difference to your confidence once you start riding.

Beginner Training with Experienced Guides

Before anyone heads into the jungle, every rider completes a practical training session.

Your instructor will explain:

  • Starting and stopping
  • Smooth acceleration and braking
  • Shifting gears
  • Correct riding position
  • Balance
  • Riding uphill and downhill safely
  • Guide signals used during the tour

The training is relaxed, friendly, and designed specifically for first-time riders.

Practice on Our Purpose-Built Training Track

After learning the basics, it’s time to ride.

You’ll begin on our dedicated practice track where you can become familiar with your quad bike in a controlled environment.

Our guides ride alongside you, giving tips and helping you improve your control and confidence.

Nobody is rushed.

Only when the guides are satisfied that everyone can safely control their ATV does the group continue onto the main route.

Then the Real Adventure Begins

The first section of the tour follows quiet village roads where you’ll experience everyday local life before gradually entering the surrounding countryside and jungle.

As the scenery changes, so does the adventure.

Our guides select different routes depending on the group’s ability and current trail conditions.

Depending on the season, your ride could include:

  • Jungle trails
  • River crossings
  • Muddy tracks
  • Mountain roads
  • Spectacular viewpoints overlooking Mae Taeng

Riding as a Team

Throughout the tour, you’ll simply follow the guide riding at the front.

They use clear hand signals to indicate:

  • Which direction to go
  • When to slow down
  • When to stop
  • Any obstacles ahead

There’s no navigation to worry about, leaving you free to enjoy the ride and scenery.

Occasionally we encounter elephants working with their mahouts along the route. When this happens, everyone stops, switches off their engines, and quietly enjoys the moment from a respectful distance. It’s often one of the highlights of the day.

Are ATVs Safe for Beginners?

This is probably the question we’re asked most often.

Modern ATVs are incredibly capable machines designed specifically for rough terrain. They are much more stable than many first-time riders expect and are surprisingly difficult to overturn when ridden correctly.

The key is listening to your guides and trusting the machine.

The terrain may look intimidating at first—rocks, ruts and steep sections often appear bigger than they really are—but the ATV is designed to handle exactly these kinds of conditions.

There are a few simple safety rules everyone should remember:

  • Never place your feet on the ground while the ATV is moving.
  • Keep loose clothing away from the wheels and moving parts.
  • Follow your guide’s instructions at all times.
  • Stay calm and ride smoothly rather than trying to force the ATV through obstacles.

By following these simple rules, accidents are extremely rare.

Expect a Physical Adventure

Although you don’t need previous experience, ATV riding is more active than many people imagine.

Over three hours you’ll be steering, balancing, standing occasionally over rough sections, and constantly reacting to the terrain.

Most guests finish pleasantly tired—in the best possible way.

It’s a genuine outdoor adventure rather than simply sitting on a machine.

More Than Just an ATV Tour

Many guests tell us the biggest surprise isn’t the riding—it’s how disconnected they feel from everyday life.

For several hours you’re away from traffic, phones, emails and schedules.

Instead, you’re surrounded by jungle, mountain scenery, fresh air and the sound of the trail beneath your wheels.

It’s muddy.

It’s exciting.

It’s challenging.

And for many people, it’s one of the most memorable experiences of their trip to Chiang Mai.
