In the face of nature’s challenges, the 8Adventures team has once again proven its commitment to the community. As the Mae Taeng river reached unprecedented highs and flooding houses in Mueng Kuet, Kuet Chang and Ban Sop Kai, our local crew and volunteers stepped into action, turning skills and resources into lifesaving tools.

As the floodwaters surged, our experienced guides used rafts to navigate through flooded roads, sometimes crossing rice fields to rescue villagers stranded in their homes. They delivered essential food and water supplies, ensuring that those affected by the disaster were not left without support. Our 8Adventures camp became a hub of activity, serving as the coordination point for organizing and distributing supplies.

Once the waters receded, the hard work continued. Our team went house to house, using water pumps and shovels to clear the thick mud, which in some places was over a meter deep.

Floods in northern Thailand are primarily driven by changes in land use for agriculture, expanding communities, and more frequent and severe forest fires. As forested areas diminish, the region’s ability to absorb water is greatly reduced, leading to an increased risk of flash floods.

This community-driven effort was made possible through the collaboration of local residents, volunteers, and our incredible staff, who worked tirelessly to restore the area. Mae Sot, a bustling border town in Thailand (357km from Chiang Mai), is grappling with severe flooding as heavy rains cause the Moei River to overflow. The deluge has raised the river’s level by 1.6 meters, inundating villages and vital areas like the Thai Friendship bridge and Rim Moei market. 

Emergency services are working tirelessly to aid residents and evacuate those in peril. The continuous downpour has worsened conditions, prompting the distribution of sandbags in hard-hit regions like Moo 1, Ban Mae Pa Nuea, and the Mae Pa subdistrict. This flooding not only disrupts daily life but also threatens the well-being of refugees from Myanmar residing in the town.

Yesterday, a ferry broke loose near the town. 

The situation in Mae Sot highlights the vulnerabilities faced by communities living near the Thai-Myanmar border, especially with the area’s significant refugee population. The town’s infrastructure and emergency response capabilities are being put to the test as they strive to mitigate the impacts of this natural disaster. Local authorities, including the Tha Sai Luat Subdistrict Municipality and the Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office (DDPM), are coordinating efforts to safeguard the community and provide necessary aid.

With rain continuing to fall, the risk of further flooding remains high. The local government and disaster response teams are on high alert, prepared to extend their support to other affected areas if needed. This situation underscores the importance of preparedness and the challenges that come with managing a disaster of this scale in a region already dealing with humanitarian concerns.
