After a welcome briefing, there is time to enjoy complimentary tea or coffee while everyone gets ready for the morning ahead.
Before leaving the base camp, every rider completes a practical training session on our purpose-built practice circuit.

The first few kilometres provide a gentle introduction. Quiet roads beside the Mae Taeng River pass local homes, roadside food stalls and small farming communities, while whitewater rafting trips can often be seen making their way downstream. Rather than rushing straight into the mountains, the route gradually leaves the busy roads behind as the scenery begins to change.

Through Forests, Farmland and Mountain Villages

One of the things that makes Mae Taeng such an enjoyable place to explore is the variety of landscapes within a relatively small area. During a typical ride, the route passes through farmland, bamboo forests, native woodland and mountain tracks, with regular stops to take photographs, enjoy the views and have a drink of water.

The season also changes the character of the tour. During the rainy months the surrounding hills become intensely green, streams begin flowing again and muddy sections add another dimension to the ride. In the cooler season, clear skies often reveal panoramic views across the Mae Taeng Valley, while the forest provides welcome shade throughout the hotter months.

As the trail climbs higher into the hills, small villages begin to appear. Communities including Lahu and Lisu families, alongside local people born and raised in Mae Taeng, continue to live and farm in these mountains. Visitors pass through respectfully, gaining a glimpse of everyday rural life that many people never experience during a typical visit to Chiang Mai.

When conditions allow, one of the highlights of the tour is driving up to Huay Ka Kup, where traditional homes overlook sweeping views across the surrounding mountains and valley below. It is one of the most popular places to stop for photographs and appreciate just how varied the landscape becomes once you leave the main road behind.

Throughout the tour there are regular opportunities to stop for photographs, enjoy the changing scenery and simply take in the atmosphere of the Mae Taeng countryside.
Our ATV tour is often described as an off-road adventure, but for many guests it becomes something more than that. It is an opportunity to explore quieter parts of Mae Taeng, discover landscapes beyond the usual tourist route and spend a few hours experiencing the forests, villages and mountain scenery that make this corner of northern Thailand such a rewarding place to visit.

Our team has come up with 3 reasons why you give quad biking a go!

Explore the Mae Taeng Valley: This is truly one of the most beautiful places to visit in Chiang Mai, and often missed by tourists. Our tours take place in the jungles of this mountainous valley which has stunning views, tropical forests and a river running through it. (See our White Water Rafting tour) You’ll see a traditional way of life and meet our guides who are locals of the area.

Try a new experience: Quad biking is fun! It requires a degree of skill and strength and it’s exciting to be able to drive anywhere. You’ll be amazed how the vehicles can conquer any terrain from steep climbs, rocks, mud and river crossings. Combine that with fresh air and being out in nature and we know you’ll have a great day out.

Safety: 8Adventure’s always use the highest quality international gear, from a fresh fleet of modern ATVs to full body armour. We don’t cut costs and provide you with a safety briefing, training and laps of our test track. All of our staff are trained in First Aid and CPR. Be careful with cheap tour operators in Thailand who may not refularly service their equipment. Read our ATV Safety Trips

Advice for First-Time and Experienced Riders visiting Thailand

Whether you call it an ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle) or a quad bike, these rugged four-wheel machines are built for fun and exploration. In Chiang Mai’s Mae Taeng valley, ATVs aren’t just for thrill-seekers — they’re also a practical way to reach remote jungle areas, river crossings, and mountain viewpoints.

If you’ve never ridden one before, don’t worry. With the right preparation and a few key techniques, you’ll be handling rough terrain like a pro in no time.

1. Get to Know the Controls

Before setting off, spend time familiarising yourself with:

Throttle – Usually a thumb lever or twist grip.

Brakes – Front (right handlebar) and rear (left handlebar or foot pedal).

Gears – Neutral (N), Drive (D) or Low (L), and Reverse (R) on most models.

Kill Switch – Quickly shuts off the engine in emergencies.

Tip: Always start the ATV in Neutral (N) and keep your foot off the throttle when starting.

2. Master the Basics on Flat Ground

Practice in a safe, open area before heading into challenging terrain. Get used to:

Smoothly accelerating and braking.

Shifting gears only when the engine is at low revs.

Making controlled turns by leaning your body slightly into the direction you want to go.

3. Body Position is Key

The way you shift your weight affects balance, grip, and safety:

Uphill: Lean forward to keep the front wheels grounded.

Downhill: Lean back to prevent tipping forward.

Corners: Lean into the turn while keeping your outside foot firmly on the footrest.

Rough ground: Stay loose and let your arms absorb bumps.

4. Keep Your Distance

ATVs can kick up dust, mud, and stones — and they need more stopping distance than a car. Keep at least two vehicle lengths between you and the rider in front.

5. Always Ride with Both Hands on the Bars

If you want to take photos, stop completely first. Riding one-handed reduces control and increases risk.

6. Respect the Terrain and Environment

In Chiang Mai’s jungle trails, you might encounter wildlife, elephants, or livestock. Slow down when passing animals, avoid tearing up vegetation, and stick to established tracks to protect the environment.

7. What to Wear

For safety and comfort:

Helmet (mandatory at 8Adventures).

Long sleeves and trousers to protect from sun and scratches.

Gloves for grip and blister prevention.

Closed shoes or boots — never ride in flip-flops.

Sunglasses or goggles to shield your eyes from dust.

8. Safety First

Listen carefully to your guide’s instructions.

Don’t ride beyond your skill level — speed is fun, but control is safer.

If your ATV goes off a steep slope, jump clear, tuck, and roll to reduce injury risk.

Learning with 8Adventures

At 8Adventures in the Mae Taeng valley, we start every tour with a thorough safety briefing and test circuit session before heading into the jungle. Our expert guides will coach you on technique while showing you some of the most scenic trails in Chiang Mai — from river crossings to mountain viewpoints.

Final Thought:
Riding an ATV is about more than just speed — it’s about skill, awareness, and connecting with the terrain. Learn the basics, respect the environment, and you’ll enjoy one of the most unforgettable adventures in northern Thailand.

Adventure Tourism is an increasingly popular choice for travellers in Asia and in particular the north of Thailand. The mountains and jungles that surround Chiang Mai are the perfect place to explore and enjoy an exciting range of activities, from whitewater rafting to trekking and ATV. Many of these tours last around 3hrs so it’s possible to experience several adventure activities in a single day, perfect for people who want to get as much out of their holiday time as possible.

Firstly, Chiang Mai’s seasonal climate should be taken into consideration. In the summer months (April- June) the heat can be baking hot, and at times unbearable for those accustomed to cooler temperatures. Water based activities can still be enjoyed as fast flowing rivers offer a welcomed relief from the heat, although due to the lack of rain sometimes the water levels can drop too low. For this reason, rafting is most fun during the rainy season (June- September). The most popular time to visit northern Thailand is December- February, as the temperature is much more pleasant. All adventure tourism activities are recommend during this period.

Secondly, consider your groups requirements, age and abilities. If you’re travelling with a family you’ll be pleased to know that many tours can be enjoyed by everyone, including young children. Kids love jungle trekking and rafting! If you’re travelling with a partner, you may wish to experience staying overnight in a hilltribe village. This is a unique and inspiring activity and can be combined with other fun adventures including ATV, Rafting, Trekking and Zipline. Large groups can also be accommodated, although it’s essential to contact the travel operators in advance during peak season.

Lastly, choose a company that has good reviews and safety record. Look for the TAT (Tourism Authority Thailand) number and research tours on popular sites such as TripAdvisor. If the operator receives 5-star reviews consistently then you’ve a good chance of having an amazing time. Be aware of low budget companies who may cut corners as regards to safety, insurance and maintenance of boats and vehicles.

Are you ready for an off-road adventure? Chiang Mai is a great place to start, in particular the Mae Taeng valley which is home to activity experience experts, 8Adventures. We are proud to offer some of the best ATV tours in Chiang Mai, which can easily be combined with other fun trips including Jungle Trekking or Whitewater Rafting.

On arrival at our basecamp we’ll give you a full safety briefing, before heading out to our test circuit where you can get to grips with the vehicle’s controls. Then we’re off into the jungle! Our routes travel through some amazing scenery and you’ll experience the adrenaline of driving up steep hills and across very rough terrain. We’re likely to see elephants, and some of our routes even include a river crossing. We like to think of our ATV adventures as a ‘safari’ and we use the vehicles to access usually inaccessible environments where your guide will point out interesting plants and wildlife.

8Adventures Top 10 ATV Tips:

Follow all commands from your trip leader

Don’t drive too close to the ATV in front

Always start the vehicle in Neutral (N)

Only shift gear when the engine isn’t revving high

To steer, lean and push the handlebar in the direction of travel

When driving on uneven ground shift your body weight to keep the ATV balanced

Stop the ATV if you wish to take a photo, as you need both hands to control the vehicle

When going downhill, lean back

When going uphill, lean forward

If you drive off a steep hill, jump off the vehicle and tuck and roll to avoid injury!

Our ATV adventure rides are no doubt a fun, exciting tour through the lush lined roads of Northern Thailand. Guests often finish the trip feeling energized and buzzing over the thrill, but also grateful that the ride wasn’t as intense or scary as they may have thought.

We also realize that some of our guests come looking for a more extreme rip through windy mountain roads, but in the past those kinds of ATV tours resulted in accidents. Generally, no severe injuries occurred, but 8Adventures prides itself on providing an experience that is both adrenaline inducing and safe, so we adjusted our ATV rides to fit that, and it has been quite successful.

Here is one of many rave reviews about our ATV tour:

“Fun, Profesional, Safe †ATV‡ †Tour‡”

Reviewed April 6, 2015 via mobile

“We did the 4 hour ATV tour with our guide James. Everything was profesional, and although we had a late pickup due to other tourists sleeping in, we arrived safe and sound. If you get car sick, take some gravol, as the road is winding and hilly, but the views are remarkable.
Once on site, the safety briefing was thorough. We had a member of our tour who had never ridden an ATV before, and she was confident after a few runs around the practice circuit. The tour was exciting, and the guides elevated the challenges as we became more comfortable with the bikes. We traveled through rivers past elephants bathing, along some roads, and into the jungle trails. Afterwards returning to main camp for a good lunch and a dust blowout with the air compressor! !
One thing to mention; due to the time of year, mid March, there was extensive burning going on in the highlands. As part of the tour is a trek up to a mountain top for picture taking, the tour guide suggested, due to the smoke and heat, it might not be such a good idea. Instead, after lunch, we mounted the bikes and cruised a short distance to a small waterfall with a fun rock slide.
A very enjoyable day had by all, from experienced ATV riders, to beginners. If your crew are all experienced inform the guide and he will adjust the route accordingly.”

At 8Adventures your safety is our number one priority and we regularly train staff in every aspect of land and water safety. The Red Cross certifies all of our guides in First Aid and CPR and we use the best safety equipment including CE EN helmets and UL Coastguard approved life jackets.

White Water Rescue Technician Course

We also take every available opportunity to learn advanced safety skills and this week Eric and Sak successfully completed the White Water Rescue Technician Course arranged by Rescue 3 International, the world-renowned adventure activity training organisation. The course included techniques to safely rescue swimmers, advanced boat and rope systems, scene management and risk assessment.

Thailand is generally a very safe country to visit, but it’s worth considering that not all tour operators or adventure companies adhere to international safety standards. On occasions local businesses may take unnecessary risks with equipment or vehicles and use untrained guides in an attempt to save money.

During a trip with 8Adventures, guests are covered by full insurance and we strive to maintain our impeccable safety record.

Chiang Mai ATV and Rafting Adventure

by Sioned Curoe (Ned)

Our day starts at 8 a.m. when Eric Southwick, the friendly owner and proprietor of 8Adventures, greets my mother and I at the door of our guesthouse. I’d met him a few days before when mom and I went on the 15k “soft” river paddle, and I am raring to get back on the water for something more challenging.

The ride is cool, and a half hour from our destination, the road starts to narrow and though still paved, it’s surrounded on all sides by farmland. Farmers have cleared off jungle brush to make way for banana trees, teak wood, and even coffee grown by Akha villagers.

We finally pull up to 8Adventures’ central hub, the area is buzzing with activity, guides and drivers – all of them Thai with the exception of Isaac – checking equipment and setting up for a new day.

They have the group of us sign waivers and insurance forms, then lead the group out to the first part of our action-packed day: ATV riding. Everyone is outfitted with a helmet and safety goggles, which (little though did I know at the time) will become extremely important.

8Adventures ATV

The crew at 8Adventures has two types of four-wheelers available. The first is a thumb-throttle attached to the right handle, and the second is a twist-throttle handle commonly found on motorbikes. One staff member walks us through both bikes: “this is the brake, this is the ignition, here’s how to start it, etc.” Each of us picks a bike – here I immediately leap on a thumb-throttle ATV, knowing from experience that they’re infinitely easier to manage when driving over bumps. Driving an ATV is rarely a smooth process, and twist-throttles are far too easy to accidentally gun when you’re jerking around in your seat.

Then the time comes to make our way out into the wilderness! We pass elephants with fellow tourists on their backs, as well as buffalo drawing oxcarts over a bridge, and descend down curving roads on the steep hill. Just before stopping for a water break, our group drives along a sunbathed road lined with trees, all of them bursting with bright orange flowers.

“I wish I had my camera. You and the trees would’ve made a great picture,” Mom laments when we take a break. “Better yet, I wish I brought sunscreen,” she says, grimacing down at her arms that’re already starting to redden.

We start up again, and on this second leg of the journey we’re going to drive through a remote forest. “There are villages up here,” our guide tells us, “but they only have dirt roads, so it’s hard to get cars through.” He leads us down a gravel track, out of the direct sun and eventually, into the jungle. Trees whiz by, and I can hear the warning calls of monkeys in the trees but I’m concentrating too hard on the road ahead of me to look around as much as I may want.

We spend nearly forty minutes there, rolling along branching paths up and down hills covered with trees, brush, and very red dirt. Before I realize it, our group breaks back out onto a paved road following the curve of a river. We pass through more a few more clusters of homesteads before we come back to a bridge I recognize – and a moment later we arrive back at 8Adventures just in time for lunch.

8Adventures Inflatable Kayaking (IK)

My afternoon adventure starts with the group of us – my mother, I, and four Chinese tourists – suiting up in lifejackets and helmets at the hub of 8Adventures, just off the bank of the Mae Taeng River. While we strap ourselves up properly, six guides run around the property, strapping inflatable rafts to a truck and piling paddles alongside them.

When the truck has stopped and the boats are laid on the ground, Isaac walks us through some of the basic safety reminders, including “always wear a helmet” and “don’t put your feet down if you fall in the water.”

I hear the dull roar of rushing water around the corner, and can’t stifle the few lines of “Just Around the Riverbend” that escape as I paddle forward, eager to get to the first of the whitewater. We take our boats through one at a time, with space between in case we get stuck. And get stuck we do – even with our expert guides, the water is extremely low and in a few cases Isaac has to hop out of the boat and give it a tug over the worst of the rocks.

“Okay, paddle hard!” Isaac says in more than one case, where I provide enough power to rocket us up and over a shallow spot instead of getting stuck. “Hold on!” he tells me just in time, as I’m nearly bounced out of my seat and the boat entirely. There are small moments of calm between rapids, usually enough to catch my breath and take a drink of water before we’re off again.

“We’ve finished the hard part. Do you want to steer?” Isaac asks when we hit a calm spot. I agree after a moment. “Okay, the hardest part is switching.”

“I’ll just jump in the water.” I proceed to do exactly that – the river feels great, especially after paddling for an hour in the hot afternoon sun. But another rough area is coming up quickly, so I do my best impression of a dolphin and launch myself into the back of the raft.

“Hey, that was pretty good!” Don calls from behind us. I smile but have no time to reply before we enter the rapids. Steering is a challenge – I call out directions to Isaac to go left or right, muscling around the rocks. We do get stuck once, but a little bit of jiggling shakes us free.

Mae Taeng River is an extremely popular spot on hot weekends, and the lower end even has numerous bamboo huts on stilts sitting over the river where Thai people like to come and relax for free, drinking and socializing until the sun goes down.

And then, at last, our landing. Mom and I get out, hiking up the riverbank while Don and Isaac take care of the boats. Before long we’re heading back to the hub a few hundred meters uphill, soaked to the bone and grinning.

“Did you have fun?” Eric asks when we trudge in, dropping our equipment off on hangers.

“Absolutely!”
